The inception and present governance of the Council
Akuressa LGC was established by Gazette notification bearing No. 453/12 of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka published on 12th May 1978. It came into operation with the publication of the Extraordinary Gazette notification bearing No. 485/17 dated 1987/12/23. Mr. Kithsiri Dias Amarawardene took office on 1988/01/01 as the first Special Commissioner of the Akuressa LGC until an election was held and the members took office. The election to appoint the inaugural members of the Akuressa LGC was held on 1991/05/11 and Mrs. Suneetha Dikmadugoda emerged victorious and was appointed as the first chairperson of the local council. The Special Commissioners, Chairman/Chairwoman and vice chairman/vice chairwoman of the Akuressa LGC from the initiation to the present are listed in the table given below.
